How to get there & park
Go towards Fort William after 3 miles at a roundabout turn left up Glen Nevis. One mile up the glen there is a forest road on the right - sign posted Braveheart Car park. The West Highland Way could be said to start (or finish) at this point but the purist would say that it must finish in the centre of Fort William. However from this point it is possible to walk the first section of the Way on a there and back basis. Grid reference NN122737
Description of walks
A good target for a half day walk is the Dun Deardail fort. From the car park follow the forest road, at the first fork take the right up the hill. This road climbs steadily until near its end the West Highland Way leads directly up the hill. At the summit (two and a half miles from the car park) there is a fence and stile. A path leads off the way to the left to Dun Deardail Fort.
Footwear
Most of the walk is on forest road but the top section to the watershed and on to the fort is at times muddy so boots are recommended
Gradients & terrain
Dun Deardail is a good three miles from the car park and the walk involves about a thousand feet of uphill. The fort is of interest and the view well worth the effort.
